Oil colours that meet the needs of the Professional Artist and Discerning Amateur alike Ö
Stevenson Professional Quality Oil Colours are made from alkali-refined linseed oil with the exception of titanium and zinc whites where refined safflower oil is used. Only permanent (lightfast) pigments are employed in their formulation. Tinting strength and consistency is very comparable to other professional artistís oil paints. The 57 colours comprising our oil line can be used with confidence, by any level of artist.
“OIL SLICK” paints
Many of our oil colours are also available in Oil stick form. For more details, see STEVENSON Oil Slicks.
Oil Painting Mediums
Stevenson can supply you with the following artists’ mediums and solvents:
Mineral Spirits (Odorless)
This low-odor solvent can be used to thin oil paints and to clean painting tools and brushes. When using petroleum solvents be sure to provide adequate ventilation.
Alkali-Refined Linseed Oil
A pure refined oil for glazing, making varnishes, or mixing with oil paints.
Produced by heating refined linseed oil in a vacuum or inert atmosphere. This higher viscosity oil is partially polymerized but not oxidized. Stand oil can be used for glazing, be added to varnish recipes or mixed with oil paints.
Cobalt Napthenate Drier(1½ % active salts) Speeds drying time of oils. Avoid excessive use – too much drier can produce painting defects.
Available in –120 ml jar
Satin Varnish and Medium (Elvacite)
An acrylic resin dissolved in petroleum solvent. It is fast drying, non-yellowing, stable and flexible. Use as a final varnish or painting medium. Helps prevent cracking and cleavage of paint layers. When using mediums containing solvents be sure to provide adequate ventilation.
Concentrated Damar Solution
(8lb cut) Used in glazing mediums and as a final varnish. To use as a varnish thin approximately 50% with painting solvent. When using mediums containing solvents be sure to provide adequate ventilation.
Stevenson Painting Solvent
An aromatic hydrocarbon. A more active solvent than turpentine or mineral spirits. Good for dissolving artists resins such as damar and elvacite, for cleaning brushes and mixing with oils. When using petroleum solvents be sure to provide adequate ventilation.
Stevenson Alkyd Medium
Fast-drying modified oil medium for use with oil and alkyds. For thin applications such as underpainting and glazing. Durable and non-yellowing. When using mediums containing solvents be sure to provide adequate ventilation.
